Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions we receive. If you have any others, please contact us!

The main focus of Yoga is to find harmony between body and mind. Yoga is an Indian spiritual path aimed at achieving the union with the Higher Consciousness. A practitioner of Yoga is called a Yogi (male) or Yogini (female).

Outside India, Yoga is mostly associated with the practice of asanas (postures) of Hatha Yoga or as a form of exercise. All Yoga is derived for Hatha Yoga. The Sanskrit term Yoga has many meanings. It is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, “to yoke”, or “to unite”.

At Yogacara we strive to ensure an authentic Yoga practice, and not simply what is trendy. Yoga has taken on a life of its own in the western world; much of it based on a “fitness” mentality. Authentic Yoga focuses on balancing all aspects of mind & body, and does not simply focus on the ego and physical appearance. Yoga is considered to be the most ancient physical discipline; it is a metaphor for balance in every area of life.

Our classes are designed for all levels however, if you are new to yoga or are concerned about the pace for a vinyasa or power class, we suggest joining us for hatha classes first. When most people refer to “yoga” as an umbrella term, they are usually referring to hatha based classes. Yin and restorative are also recommended for all levels.

All styles are available to you during your 1st trimester. During the 2nd & 3rd Hatha or Restorative is a great class for you up until the 34th week of pregnancy. Please let your teacher know so they can give appropriate variations for you. Your safety is important to us so please avoid attendance after the 34th week.

All you need is some comfortable clothing that you can move in. Please do not feel that you have to go out and purchase specialty clothing for yoga; it is not necessary, and not required. Come as you are!  We provide a space that promotes non-judgment and we remind people that Yoga is a “non-competitive sport”.

Try to not eat at least 1/2 hour before a class. The lighter the meal the better, as you will be working with your digestive tract and that may cause mild discomfort.

We provide mats, blankets, blocks, bolsters & straps for all students. You are free to bring your own mat and rest it on top of the mats provided.
